Worthy Sacrifices

Very few things in life are all good. Within all things we encounter there is complexity to how we may perceive it. Good things can also hold some pain, regret, uncertainty, and so much more. But I came across Janessa Docking’s Instagram the other day. She writes about motherhood and one of her posts shared how through all the hard things you encounter in motherhood, she finds it to be a worthy sacrifice.

And that term has stuck with me since I’ve read it.

This is partly because it rings incredibly true for my experience of motherhood, but also because it rings true when I think of other times in my life when I have followed something I’m passionate about, and the fire in me never dimmed.

Nothing comes without its share of costs, but there is something beautiful and fulfilling when you find something where the costs don’t matter. The sacrifices feel worthy.

Again, parenting may not be the avenue where you encounter this. Perhaps it’s leaving your corporate job and venturing out on your own with a business idea you’ve always had. Money might get tighter and there may be a multitude of unknowns, but those sacrifices feel worthy.

Or maybe it’s selling your home and venturing to an apartment community that feels more aligned with you and your current stage of life. It’s the opposite of what many people your age are doing, it’s giving up the “suburban dream” many paint as the ultimate goal in adulthood. But those sacrifices are more than worthy to you as you seek the life and community you yearn for.

This can go in so many directions, but the underlying thread is to seek something where the inevitable costs and sacrifices feel worthy of taking on and tackling. Nothing in life is all good or all easy. But finding something where the costs feel worthy can carry you through the inevitable setbacks and difficulties that come up.
